Koldar and his successors husband their strength. Out of necessity they maintain their allegiance to the Magocracy of Sorĉado, sending troops and tribute when demanded. The Cities of the Plains gradually recover from the ravages of war. In the Waste, the Festival District is rebuilt and once again becomes a center of trade.
Many dispossessed nobles from the lost provinces take refuge in the Plains. While their swords are welcome in the Chancellor's Host, there is friction with the Communes, whose relative power has grown. With the loss of the Buried Giant and the Wizard School, the power of the College is greatly weakened in the Commonwealth, and the power of the Church grows. In particular the influence of the Dark Priors expands, extending beyond the Commonwealth and into the Hinterland.
The Witch Queens of Sorĉado are often at war. They are opposed by the Counts of Elvendalen, who are supported by irredentist remnants of the Sable Dynasty in the Ancient City, and also with the Dicastery of Galben, whose Cardinals are bitterly opposed to the Witches.
Chancellor Koldar is succeeded by his son, second of that name, and then in turn by his daughter Horia. In her time some magic users begin to flee Sorĉado, bringing tidings of bitter and secret internecine conflict among the Witches. Horia begins to plan rebellion. But before she can act, illness strikes her down. It is left to her son, Kollane, to finally confront the Witch Queen.
